North York

North York is a former municipality of Toronto, and  comprises the central part of the northern section of  the city. As of the 2006 Census, it has a population of 635,370, and one of the most diverse areas of Toronto. It includes some of the most affluent areas of the city (The Bridle Path, Hogg’s Hollow, York Mills, Willowdale, Bayview Village) and yet some of the poorest ears as well (Jane and Finch, Flemingdon Park, and Lawrence Heights).

The ear includes Don Mills which is famous for being Canada’s first planned postwar suburbs.  It also includes excellent examples of modern architecture, from ranch-style houses to glass and steel factory buildings.

Once a sleepy small-town residential enclave, Willowdale has evolved into a dense core with a city skyline following Yonge Street. The heart of the neighbourhood is Mel Lastman Square – named after the former mayor of both North York and Toronto.

Another neighbourhood in the area worth mentioning is Weston. It was one of the many small rural towns that surrounded Toronto that were eventually swallowed up as the city grew. Today it’s known for Weston’s main street, and Weston Road, and has maintained a small town feel, making it a one of the few areas with affordable housing.  It is also readily accessible to the downtown core via the Go Train station, and poised to become a popular location for those looking for raise a family.
