The Canadian cultural airwaves have lost one of its dearest today. Long-time CBC Host of The Vinyl Cafe and author Stuart McLean has died at age 68 after a battle with melanoma.

For 22-years the legendary broadcaster and storyteller addressed the nation as a small used record store owner, “Dave” in his weekly Vinyl Cafe radio program. The program included an eclectic and highly personalized mix of stories, essays, and musical performances. Stuart McLean’s advice for finding a story: Go somewhere.

McLean made a surprise announcement in December that he would be going on hiatus to focus on his treatment for melanoma, which was first was diagnosed the year prior.

“We were deeply saddened to learn that Stuart McLean passed away earlier today, said Susan Marjetti, executive director of radio and audio for CBC English Services in a statement. “Stuart was an exceptional storyteller who has left an indelible mark on CBC Radio and countless communities across Canada.”

“I don’t want you to worry about me,” McLean said in a message to his fans in December. “A year ago I told you that I expected this to be just a bump in the road, not the end of the road. I still believe that to be true. I hope we will meet up again — on the radio or in theatres. We’ll make sure to tell you before that happens. In the meantime, look after yourselves and each other. And know that this isn’t goodbye. It’s just…so long for now.”
