Announced this morning at a press conference hosted by The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall will receive $8,330,000 to fund the revitalization of Massey Hall in Toronto.

“We are thrilled that the Government of Canada is investing in Massey Hall’s future through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, said Joly in a press release statement. “This funding will help set the stage for the completion of the Massey Hall Revitalization Project to ensure that Massey Hall remains a home to showcase and cultivate our future leaders in arts, culture and beyond.”

The funds will come from Cultural Spaces Fund, which provides Canadian cultural hubs with financial support to help them maintain the services they provide to Canadians in their community. Launched in 2001, it has provided over $410 million in support to 1,381 projects across the country. The program receives an average of 137 applications each year.

Massey Hall will use the funds to renovate the hall with the goal of improving accessibility and updating technical infrastructure.

The last major renovation at Massey Hall was in 1948.
