Musical Toronto’s weekly Critic’s Picks are a fully curated list of some of the best concerts happening now through the end of the week. This is not to say we are the provocateurs of taste, but simply seek to provide a good weekly summary. For a look at the full breadth of what’s available in and around Toronto, check out our curated concert listings here: Musical Toronto Datebook.

The big guns are out this week when it comes to Christmas programming, with both the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s annual large-scale Messiah (Dec. 18) and Tafelmusik’s relatively intimate Baroque version on offer (Dec. 14-17). If you want to give your vocal cords a workout, a good choice is Tafelmusik’s Sing-Along Messiah with Herr Handel, a.k.a. Ivars Taurins the rest of the year (Dec. 18). Other seasonal offerings include Amadeus Choir (Dec. 17), Toronto Masque Theatre (Dec. 12), Orpheus Choir (Dec. 13), Jann Arden Christmas with TSO (Dec. 13), Toronto Choral Society (Dec. 14), and Toronto Children’s Chorus (Dec. 17). National Ballet of Canada’s The Nutcracker continues (Daily from Dec. 13). Not too many non-Yuletide shows, but I found two terrific ones — Ukrainian-Canadian pianist and composer Dmitri Levkovich gives a recital at Heliconian Hall (Dec. 13), and the Gryphon Trio playing a program of Schönberg and Brahms at the Jane Mallett Theatre (Dec. 15).
