THE SCOOP | COC Sweeps 2016 Dora Awards

It was a night of celebration at the 37th annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards at Toronto’s Harbour Front Centre, with the Canadian Opera Company taking home eight statues in the Opera categories, with five for Siegfried alone.

Hosted by Bruce Dow in the sweltering 35-degree heat, 48 awards, as well as Silver Ticket Award and audience choice awards, were doled out over the three-hour ceremony to a boisterous, cork popping crowd.

The big winner was the COC, who won five for Siegfried: Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction to François Girard, Outstanding Scenic Design to Michael Levine, Outstanding Lighting Design to David Finn and Outstanding Musical Direction to Johannes Debus. La Traviata took three for Outstanding Performance – Male to Quinn Kelsey, Outstanding Performance – Female to Ekaterina Siurina and Outstanding Costume Design to Cait O’Connor.

Indie opera company darlings Tapestry Opera won for Outstanding New Musical for M’dea Undone with Marjorie Chan (librettist) and John Harris (composer).

Against the Grain, who are currently in Banff workshopping a new production of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, won the Outstanding Performance – Ensemble category for their innovative production of Handel’s Messiah.

The musical theatre division was led by Mirvish’s Kinky Boots, which had 10 nominations, and took home Outstanding Production, Outstanding Male Performance for Alan Mingo Jr. and Outstanding Choreography.

The general theatre categories Tarragon Theatre picked up a total of three: Mustard (Outstanding Male Performance: Anand Rajaram and Outstanding New Play: Kat Sandler); and Blind Date (Outstanding Female Performance: Rebecca Northan).

Factory Theatre captured two awards for Salt-Water Moon (Outstanding Direction: Ravi Jain) and Bombay Black (Outstanding Lighting Design: Jennifer Lennon).

Not to be undone, Canadian Stage also won two for Chimerica (Outstanding Scenic Design: Judith Bowden) and Botticelli in the Fire & Sunday in Sodom (Outstanding Production: Jordan Tannahill)

VideoCabaret took home awards for The Great War: Outstanding Ensemble and Costume Design by Astrid Janson and Melanie McNeill.

Theatre Centre’s We Are Proud to Present closed the division with a win for Outstanding Sound Design/Composition (Debashis Sinha).

In the independent theatre division, it was Cliff Cardinal’s night for his critically praised solo show Huff, which won Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Male Performance.

Canadian Stage’s remounted production of Betroffenheit won big with the dance division’s Outstanding Production award. Peggy Baker Dance Projects and Princess Productions tied with two wins each: Baker’s Phase Space (two Design Awards), and Princess for Outstanding Original Choreography & Outstanding Performance – Male.

Cold Blood won for Outstanding Touring Production presented by Canadian Stage.
