Announced during the Victoria day long weekend, Toronto’s art leader Chris Lorway has been named new Executive Director of at Stanford University’s Stanford Live and Bing Concert Hall, located in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Lorway will leave his current position as director, programming and marketing at Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall and relocate to California late this summer.

Before coming on as Director, Programming and Marketing of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall in 2014, he served as executive director of Soundstreams, Toronto’s premiere contemporary music presenter centred on promoting and premiering new work by today’s leading composers.

Born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Lorway earned a master’s degree in arts administration from Columbia University and a bachelor’s of music education from Western University.

Early in his career he co-founded of the Celtic Colours International Festival in Nova Scotia, and worked with the Lincoln Center Festival and the New Yorker Festival. Most notably he was the founding Artistic Director of the Luminato Festival.

He has also worked as a consultant on financial modelling and capital project planning for AEA Consulting in New York which included projects for Carnegie Hall, the West Kowloon Cultural District, Edinburgh Festivals, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the team at Stanford Live and to have the opportunity to animate Bing Concert Hall, and to work in other spaces across the Stanford campus, in collaboration with the world’s foremost artists, Lorway said in a press release.

The Stanford International Search Committee sought candidates with a diverse set of skills and experience, and a who demonstrated an ability to engage new audiences.

“Given the social, cultural and geographic setting of Stanford Live and Bing Concert Hall at the heart of Silicon Valley, we also knew that the next director needed to be at home in an innovative university environment and committed to strengthening connections between the campus and the broader community, said Leslie Hume, co-chair of the Stanford Live Advisory Council. We found all of those qualities in Chris Lorway, and look forward to welcoming him to the uniquely creative setting of Stanford University.”

Lorway represented an increasingly rare homegrown arts leadership, and his loss will be felt across the city. We wish him well.
