THE SCOOP | Ryerson University Launches Incubator For Music Industry

Wednesday night marked the official launch of The Music Den, a new incubator designed to foster innovation in the music industry. The program is part of Ryerson University’s faculty of communication and design (FCAD) and offers students, alumni and entrepreneurs access to mentors from the music industry.

The Music Den rounds-off Ryerson’s 15 plus incubators and is as part of its zone-learning model which includes fashion, journalism, urban energy and social innovation labs.

“The creative industries have always been in flux, and our job is to be one step ahead of the game,” said Charles Falzon, Dean, Faculty of Communication and Design, Ryerson University.

Three startups were featured including a web application for record labels and music publishers (Sodatone), a new magazine (Canada Talent) and a development and production agency (Lefty Music).

Special panel guests included Deane Cameron (President and CEO of The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall), Cherie Sinclair (Executive Producer at The Field), Jeffrey Remedios (President and CEO at Universal Music Canada), StevenEhrlick (former music executive with EMI).

The discussion included topics on the importance of discovery, human feeling in music, and whether or not is big data is friend or foe.
