The Banff Centre announces layoffs in wake of restructuring

The Banff Centre has initiated one of the largest layoffs in its 83-year history, with 33 positions axed as part of a new restructuring plan led by president and CEO Janice Price.

The cuts account for 8 percent of the workforce and are intended to streamline services to artists and patrons.

In June 2015, Price decided to put the Banff Centre’s $900 million expansion on hold after former president and CEO Jeff Melanson suddenly left the organisation in June 2014 to relocate to Toronto to be near his children.

In a statement to the CBC, Price said, “It was wonderful that the previous administration and the board went through an exercise to see what might be possible in the future for the Banff Centre, but frankly we’ve really now just modified that plan to begin first, and to focus most primarily, on the buildings that we already have on this really extraordinary campus, many of which are very old.”

The newly revised expansion will focus on updating existing facilities and strengthening the Banff Centres reputation globally.
