Canadian Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo lands top place among 5 winners of The Met National Council Auditions 2016.

Announced Sunday, March 13, Toronto mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo, was named the winner of The Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions along with four others from a pool of nine finalists.

The total of five winners included soprano Yelena Dyachek, (Sacramento), countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, (Warsaw), baritone Sol Jin (South Korea), and baritone Sean Michael Plumb (Philadelphia). Each will receive a $15,000 USD cash prize.

Winners performed two arias with the Met Orchestra under the baton of Antony Walker during the Grand Finals Concert on the Met stage on Sunday afternoon. The event was hosted by soprano Deborah Voigt and was recorded for broadcast at a later date on public radio stations across the United States.

Now in its 63rd year, The Met Auditions have been the making of many of the world’s great opera stars, including Lawrence Brownlee, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Thomas Hampson, Sondra Radvanovsky, and Frederica von Stade to name only a few.

Toronto’s Emily D’Angelo (21) gained wide attention after winning both First Prize and the Audience Choice Award at the 2015 annual Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio Competition. She landed a coveted spot on the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio for their 2016/2017 season. Roles with the COC will include Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, and covering the title role in Handel’s Ariodante. D’Angelo is currently studying under soprano Elizabeth McDonald at the University of Toronto’s undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance program. The young mezzo will make her European debut in 2016 at the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi under the baton of Maestro James Conlon.
