BREAKING | Two Canadians Win Top Prizes at 17th Chopin Piano Competition

South Korea’s Seong-Jin Cho wins 17th Frederic Chopin Piano Competition

The winners of the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition have been announced via live broadcast in Warsaw Poland.

The winner is South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. Canadian Charles Richard-Hamelin wins second prize and third prize to American pianist Kate Liu.

Fourth prize is awarded to Eric Lu (USA), and Toronto-based pianist Tony Yike Yang takes a fifth prize. The sixth prize is awarded to Dmitry Shishkin (Russia).

Charles Richard-Hamelin was also awarded the Krystian Zimerman Prize for best performance of a sonata for a total cash prize of $51,605 CAN.

  • Fryderyk Chopin Society Prize for best performance of a polonaise: Seong-Jin Cho (3 000 €)
  • Polish Radio Prize for best performance of mazurkas: Kate Liu (5 000 €)
  • Krystian Zimerman Prize for best performance of a sonata: Charles Richard-Hamelin (10 000 €)

The Chopin competition is deemed to be one of the world’s most esteemed piano contests and establishes winners with international touring careers. The three-week competition is unique in that pianists play only Chopin’s works.

Former winners include Maurizio Pollini (1960), Martha Argerich (1965), Garrick Ohlsson (1970) and Krystian Zimerman (1975).
