2015ChooiBros

Young music lovers – and those who are young at heart – are in for a treat in the upcoming season of Music & Truffles.

Presented by Mooredale Concerts, the 13th season of Music & Truffles offers five hour-long, interactive classical concerts that showcase acclaimed Canadian and international artists in stunning programs of vocal and chamber music. While designed for young people ages 6 to 11, Music & Truffles is also a great series for adults wanting to have a briefer and more interactive exposure to classical music. Emcee “Joanna” has come on board to encourage audience interaction.

Concerts take place Sundays, 1:15 p.m., between November 1, 2015 and April 17, 2016, in Walter Hall, in the Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto, 80 Queen’s Park Crescent (Museum subway). Individual tickets are only $13, but subscriptions offer a generous saving, at only $50 for all five concerts. Everyone receives a Lindt chocolate truffle at the end of each concert.  All seating is general admission.

Details, with links to videos from past performances can be found here.  Subscriptions may be ordered online, at www.mooredaleconcerts.com, mailed to Mooredale Concerts, 146 Crescent Road, Toronto M4W 1V2; or phoned in to 416-922-3714 ext. 103.

Music & Truffles’ 2015-16 season at a glance:

November 1, 2015 – Vivacious Violins

Canadian sensations and brothers Nikki Chooi, (age 26) and Timothy Chooi, (age 21) open our season, with Timothy playing a $5 million violin (on loan from the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank). Both multiple prize winners, and starting out on international solo careers, Nikki and Timothy will inspire their young audience with music by Prokofiev, Saint-Saëns and Spain’s Pablo de Sarasate, accompanied by pianist Jeanie Chung.

“Soloist Nikki Chooi made it the musical equivalent of a book that you can’t put down” – New Zealand Herald; “Vigorous, colorful” – New York Times

“Timothy Chooi’s…performance was electrifying…intuitive passion far beyond his years and with breathtaking technical virtuosity”Casa Magazine

December 13, 2015 – Calmus Ensemble, European Vocal Quintet

Songbirds from Leipzig, Germany, the Calmus Ensemble makes its Canadian debut with music from its 2015 CD, Christmas Carols of the World; a lovely blend of sound, precision, lightness and wit for the holiday season. They will sing works from the Renaissance to 20th Century, composed in England, Belgium, Ireland, France, Sweden, Puerto Rico, and more. And a great opportunity to experience operatic and a capella singing techniques.

“Calmus Ensemble is stunning in its vocal variety, mastery. The group held the audience…spellbound with its artistry.” – The Washington Post

January 17, 2016 – London Haydn Quartet with Eric Hoeprich, clarinet

Considered by many to be “supreme”, England’s London Haydn Quartet performs Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A, K. 581; and Haydn of course!   Joining the quartet is its frequent collaborator, period clarinetist Eric Hoeprich, with whom the ensemble has performed in the U.S. and Europe, and recorded the Brahms and Mozart quintets on the Glossa label.

“…they explore…repertoire with a light touch and kaleidoscopic colours…crammed with subtle pleasures.” – CD Review, The Times

March 13, 2016 – Ensemble MidtVest

With 7 players and a piano on stage, too, Denmark’s young Ensemble MidtVest makes its Canadian debut. The ensemble is renowned for creative programming and pushing the boundaries of traditional classical concert form. The players will enthrall its Toronto audience with excerpts of rare and treasured wind and piano chamber works by Schubert, Brahms, and Denmark’s Carl Nielsen.

“…You felt as though you’d been on a journey that transformed the material even as you revisited it…New York Times

April 17, 2016 – Afiara String Quartet with Joel Quarrington, bass

Two internationally renowned Canadian music forces unite to conclude the season. The globe-trotting Afiara String Quartet and Juno award winner Joel Quarrington, bass are featured on a program that includes Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13 and Dvorak’s String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 77. And maybe even some hip-hop, to get people dancing in their seats!

“A revelation…their performance individually and collectively, their musicality and maturity…placed the Afiara amongst the best of current quartets…” – La Presse

“ [Quarrington’s]performance was mesmerizing – his trademark bel canto playing style brought an otherworldly quality to Bottesini’s Elegy in D” – Double Bassist magazine, England

Cellist Adrian Fung, the dynamic founder of the Afiara String Quartet, has been artistic director of Mooredale Concerts and its Music & Truffles series since September 2014.
