It’s not often that classical music gets programmed on late night television, let alone one of the most popular shows on T.V..

Last night cellist Yo-Yo Ma took to the airwaves on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show to celebrate his 60th birthday (officially Oct 7th) and promote his new CD Songs of the Arc Life with Kathryn Scott. He performed three works, including the Courante from Bach’s Cello Suite #2, “The Swan” by Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns, and Gershwin’s Prelude No. 1, with Jon Batiste and Stay Human.

The Courant included a dance by Misty Copeland, the first female African-American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre.

The Twitterverse had a field day with the appearance, launching Yo-Yo Ma to trend alongside #MyCookingShowWouldBe, #YouMightHaveASmallDick (yes, you read that right), and #NiallsNewGirlfriend.

Yo-Yo Ma also appeared on the popular U.S. morning show Live with Kelly and Michael, on September 21st. “It’s time to class this place up,” Kelly Ripa says as she announced Yo-Yo Ma last week. You can see the video here.
