Violinist Itzhak Perlman has canceled his upcoming appearance at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra Opening Night concert on Thursday, September 24, 2015, due to emergency gall bladder surgery.
According to a media release issued by the TSO, former National Arts Centre Artistic Director and frequent TSO soloist Pinchas Zukerman will instead be taking his place for the season-opening event.
“Pinchas is the person who absolutely changed the direction of my life in 1975 when I played for him. We are so fortunate to have him join us this week. His performance will be brilliant,” said TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian in a press release.
Zukerman has a long history of performing with the TSO and is described as “part of the family” by Oundjian. Mr. Zukerman and Oundjian are close friends and go back to their early days as young violinists working in New York City.
Perlman was last seen performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on September 12 at Heinz Hall.
We will update the story as details on Perlman’s medical condition become clearer.
