The Luminato Festival has announced British arts guru Anthony Sargent as the new incoming CEO, succeeding Interim CEO Lucille Joseph.

Sargent is currently the chair of the International Society for the Performing Arts (New York) and was the founding GM at Sage Gateshead, a major Arts Centre located in England. While at Sage Gateshead, Sargent worked towards the building of a new, state-of-the-art facility, as well as the merger of three different arts organizations into a single brand.

Luminato co-founder and chair Tony Gagliano stated, “We couldn’t be more excited to introduce Anthony as our incoming CEO as Luminato Festival looks toward its second successful decade […] Anthony’s reputation and work proceeds him and we can’t wait to see him take the Luminato Festival to the next level.”

Sargent is also well known for his 16 year stint with the BBC, which included positions in Arts and Current Affairs, Artistic Projects Director for the South Bank Centre, Head of Arts for Birmingham City Council, and many others.

He also gained experience in classical music as BBC Concerts Planning Manager – with responsibilities for the coordinating, artistic management and radio broadcasting of the BBC Proms, and Artistic management and broadcasting of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Sargent plans to move to Toronto this summer to begin his first term with Luminato. But first, he will observe the upcoming 2015 Luminato Festival (June 19 to 28), as an audience member.

“In less than a decade Luminato Festival has made a global impact for Toronto – a proud new emblem of the city’s multi-faceted cultural energy and sense of adventure,” Sargent commented in the Press Release. “Festivals of many different kinds have been a consistent thread through my entire working life and I’m delighted to have been invited to work with Luminato’s visionary artistic director Jorn Weisbrodt, with the festival’s ambitious board and great staff team, and with the local arts community to lead Luminato into the future, adding new excitements to all its admired successes to date.”
