Announced today, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO) will be free for all members beginning 2015/16.
The TSYO was founded in 1974 by Victor Feldbrill, and designed to providing orchestral experience for musicians under the age of aged 22. It tops off at 81 members per season, and helps define the next generation of orchestra musicians with valuable training and future career opportunities.
The current fee for students who pass the entrance audition is $730, which will end next year. There is an additional audition fee (currently at $35) which will not be waived.
“The TSYO is one of the country’s leading youth orchestras,” TSO President and CEO Jeff Melanson said. “We want to make the most of the many opportunities ahead of us and ensure that the TSYO meets its full potential.”
TSYO will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a concert led by Conductor Shalom Bard tonight at Koerner Hall. They will be joined by TSYO alumni and coaches for a performance of Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni. The TSYO then take to their own for a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.1. More details here.
