The Canadian classical music community has lost one of its own yesterday. Former CBC Radio host and writer Jurgen Gothe, died on Thursday afternoon after a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Gothe was born in Berlin in 1944, and made his mark on CBC Radio Two program DiscDrive, a rush-hour national radio show which included classical, bluegrass, jazz, and regular commentary. He hosted the show between 1985 and 2008 from his home in Vancouver, B.C.

He also hosted a CBC program called Front Row and before that, worked at CHQM in Vancouver.

The long time music maven was also a food and wine writer, and restaurant critic for the Vancouver Sun, Globe and Mail, Georgia Straight and NUVO magazine.

His wife, Kate, confirmed the news today, and stated that it was fitting that he passed after 5 p.m., during happy hour.

He is survived by his daughter Colette.
