Nathaniel Dett Chorale – Voices of the Diaspora at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre. 8:00 p.m. $45

Named after Canadian composer and musician R. Nathaniel Dett, the Nathaniel Dett Chorale offer an engrossing choral experience with Voices of the Diaspora. The project features British composer Michael Tippett, famous secular oratorio, A Child of Our Time, interspersed with Spirituals between various sections of the work. Thin Edge New Music Collective Raging Against the Machine at the Music Gallery. 8:00 p.m. $15-20

Toronto’s Thin Edge New Music Collective and Montreal’s Ensemble Paramirabo join forces for a night of rhythmically driving works including Steve Reich’s pulsing Double Sextet, Louis Andriessen’s classic Worker’s Union, and premieres by Patrick Giguère, Brian Harman, and Anna Höstman. Royal Conservatory – Sarah Chang, Violin and Julio Elizalde, Piano at Koerner Hall. 8:00 p.m. $30-75

Internationally recognized for her impeccable technique and seemingly endless abilities, Sarah Chang will join NYC-based pianist, Julio Elizalde in a program of classics by Brahms, Ravel and Bartók. We are told tickets are selling fast so don’t delay. More info here.

Toronto Sinfonietta – A Symphony of Spirit at St. Michael’s Centre for the Performing Arts. 7:00 p.m. $10-30

The Toronto Sinfonietta endeavour to brighten up this spell of dreary weather with a concert featuring winners of the Ninth Annual Concerto Competition.  They will be performing Bruch, Elgar, Grieg, Lalo, Ravel and Rachmaninoff. More info found here.

Toronto Symphony OrchestraYear of the Sheep: A Chinese New Year Celebration at Roy Thomson Hall. 7:30 p.m. $49-229

It’s hard not to get a bit excited when piano superstar Lang Lang and one of the most important conductors in China, Long Yu are in town. In celebration of the Chinese New Year (the year of the Sheep!), they present Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals narrated in Mandarin and English, but with a surprise twist! Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Not to be missed. Info here.

Chamber Music Society of Mississauga – An Artist’s Love at the Great Hall, Unitarian Congregation of Mississauga. 8:00 p.m. $15-85

For those looking for some chamber music this week, we recommend heading over to Mississauga, to hear the MSO string quartet perform with soprano Jennifer Tung and pianist Eileen Keown. Works include Schumann’s Piano Quintet Op.44; Adagio and Allegro Op.70 for cello and piano; Märchenbilder Op.113 for viola and piano; excerpts from Waldszenen Op.82 for piano; selected lieder for soprano and piano. Associates of the Toronto Symphony – Five Small Concerts: Darkness and Light – Contrasts in Brass at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre. 7:30 p.m. $17-20

The Associates of the Toronto Symphony pride themselves on presenting affordable, top-shelf chamber music, sure to please the most discerning ears.
