2015-16 marks Peter Oundjian’s 12th season as Toronto Symphony Orchestra music director.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra have just released details on their upcoming 2015/2016 season and it looks to be much more collaborative, and dare I say “innovative” than previous years.

The season starts with a concert gala on September 24, 2015 with violinist Itzhak Perlman, who returns to Roy Thomson Hall to perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto with Music Director Peter Oundjian leading, and music by Dukas and Grieg.

The following month, renowned Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan expands her abilities by making her Canadian conducting début in a programme that also showcases her voice. She’ll be doing everything from singing Mozart arias to conducting a Haydn symphony.

October also includes baritone Russell Braun and soprano Erin Wall, performing Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony Oct 21 & 24, 2015.

Making his TSO début, Against the Grain Theatre’s Joel Ivany directs a semi-staged production of Mozart’s Requiem featuring soprano Lydia Teuscher, mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy, tenor Frédéric Antoun, bass-baritone Philippe Sly, and the Amadeus Choir and Elmer Iseler Singers, led by Mozart Festival curator Bernard Labadie.

The New Creations Festival (created by Peter Oundjian) will be co-curated by Australian composer, conductor and violist Brett Dean. It will include a festival remix by DJ Skratch Bastid, a piece by Anthony Pateras (Fragile Absolute Mar 5, 2016), and North American Première by James Ledger (Two Memorials [for Anton Weber and John Lennon] Mar 9, 2016). Some new commissions included for the festival also feature a collaboration by DJ Skratch Bastid and Kevin Lau featuring the Afiara String Quartet, and a joint work by filmmaker Peter Mettler and Canadian composer Paul Frehner. The biggest news, however, is an appearance by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood , who will present the Canadian Première of Water on March 12, 2016.

As part of the TSO’s Young People’s Concert series, designed for audiences aged 5 – 12, the Orchestra brings to music the children’s poetry collection Alligator Pie by Toronto poet Dennis Lee. A TSO co-commission composed by Abigail Richardson, the familiar lines of this work will spring off the page and onto the concert stage (Apr 2, 2016).

The TSO will also be heading out on a tour led by Peter Oundjian to Florida January. Stops include West Palm Beach, Naples, Miami, Daytona Beach and Gainsville, and will feature Concertmaster Jonathan Crow and Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki. They will also include Canadian composer John Estacio’s Wondrous Light on the program.

Two favourites are back as well:

TSO Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis’ re-imagined orchestration of Handel’s Messiah (originally premiered in 2010) will be performed in December, and will also be recorded for their second release on Chandos Records.

The Second City Guide to the Symphony will also return June 23 & 25, 2016.

You’ll find all the details here.
