Sinfonia Toronto’s next concert on Saturday February 28, 8 pm at George Weston Recital Hall will feature brilliant New York pianist Kariné Poghosyan and some of Toronto’s finest young artists, winners of the North York Music Festival. Soprano Kimberly-Rose Pefhany and violinists Julia Mirzoev and Lynn Sue-A-Quan will join Conductor Nurhan Arman and Sinfonia Toronto in a concert titled ‘Masters Meet Rising Stars’.

The colourful program features the Toronto premiere of Alan Hovhannes’ Piano Concerto Lousadzak to be performed by Kariné Poghosyan. Also on the program are some violin fireworks like Sarasate’s Gypsy Airs and Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Cappricioso. Soprano Kimberly-Rose Pefhany will sing Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate and the orchestra will perform a Mozart Divertimento and Grieg’s beloved Holberg Suite.

Brilliant Armenian-American pianist Kariné Poghosyan has been described as “extraordinary” and “larger than life” pianist, whose playing goes “to the heart of the music.” NY Concert Review called her a pianist who “has that spark.” She is the winner of top prizes at numerous competitions including the Los Angeles International Liszt Piano Competition and the Arno Babajanian Piano Competition. Kariné Poghosyan has appeared as soloist with many orchestras and she teaches at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

Now in its 16th season, Sinfonia Toronto has toured in Europe twice, receiving glowing reviews. It has released four CD’s, including a JUNO Award winner, and performs in many Ontario cities. Its extensive repertoire includes all the major string orchestra works of the 18th through 21st centuries, and it has premiered many new works. Under the baton of Nurhan Arman the orchestra’s performances present outstanding international guest artists and prominent Canadian musicians.

Nurhan Arman has conducted throughout Europe, Asia, South America, Canada and the United States, returning regularly to many orchestras in Europe. Among the orchestras Maestro Arman has conducted are the Moscow Philharmonic, Deutsches Kammerorchester Frankfurt, Filarmonica Italiana, St. Petersburg State Hermitage Orchestra, Orchestre Regional d’Ile de France, Hungarian Symphony, Milano Classica and Belgrade Philharmonic. During the 2014-15 season he will conduct in Italy, Austria, Poland and Mexico.

Kariné Poghosyan, pianist 

Kariné Poghosyan began her music studies at Yerevan School of the Arts and Komitas State Conservatory. She moved to the US in 1998 and received her BM, summa cum laude, from California State University and MM and DMA from the Manhattan School of Music, completing her DMA. in a record-breaking two years. A top prize winner in six international competitions including the Los Angeles International Liszt Piano Competition and the Arno Babajanian Piano Competition, Ms. Poghosyan also emerged at the top of the Artists International Auditions. She is currently based in New York, where she teaches at the Manhattan School of Music. She made her orchestral debut at 14 in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 and her solo Carnegie Hall debut at 23, and has since gone on to perform in many other prominent halls.

Kimberley-Rose Pefhany, soprano

Kimberley-Rose Pefhany has been described as a gifted young soprano with an “exquisite voice…a gorgeous instrument with wonderful coloratura” She made her European debut in 2012, performing the role of Barbarina for the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar. Last summer she performed the role of Pamina with the same company as well as with Toronto’s Summer Opera Lyric Theatre. Kimberley-Rose studies with Stephanie Bogle and is coached by Jennifer Tung.

Julia Mirzoev, violinist 

Julia Mirzoev has been performing in public since the age of 4. She won the Grand Prize at the Canadian Music Competition in 2008, the Provincial Finals of the Ontario Music Festival, and the special “Most Promising Performer” prize in the Golden Menorah International Music Competition that took place in Berlin, Germany. In July 2013 Julia won First Prize at the Cremona International Competition for Strings in Italy.

Lynn Sue-A-Quan, violinist

Lynn has won a number of awards in many music festivals and competitions, including 1st place in the Canadian Music Competition, Kiwanis Music Festival, North York Music Festival and Richmond Hill Music Festival. In 2014, Lynn was accepted into Maestro Aaron Rosand’s Intensive Violin Study Program at the Summit Music Festival. Lynn is currently attending the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at the Royal Conservatory of Music, where she has a scholarship under Dean Barry Shiffman and Dr. Conrad Chow.

Acclaimed as “a world-class ensemble”, Sinfonia Toronto is one of Canada’s finest chamber orchestras. Its repertoire includes all the major works for string orchestra from baroque to contemporary, and it has premiered many new works. It presents its concerts two of the finest concert halls of Toronto: at the CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio, where many of its concerts have been recorded for national broadcast and in the George Weston Recital Hall in North York. The orchestra has recorded for its own label, Marquis Classics EMI, Cambria and Analekta on iTunes.

Sinfonia Toronto consists of thirteen virtuoso strings. They perform standing, blending each musician’s soloistic energy and passion into a brilliant ensemble style under Nurhan Arman’s inspired direction. The orchestra has toured in Europe twice, travels regularly to other Ontario cities and performs many outreach concerts.

During the 2014-15 season Sinfonia Toronto will perform four Masterpiece Series concerts in Glenn Gould Studio (250 Front Street, West) and three concerts in Toronto Centre for the Arts (5040 Yonge St.). The orchestra concertizes in other Ontario centres, broadcasts on CBC and performs a number of community outreach concerts. Since 2009 Sinfonia Toronto has been serving as the orchestra-in-residence of Barrie’s Colours of Music Festival.

Guest soloists for 2014-15 include such artists as the, pianists Ilya Poletaev, Anastasia Rizikov, violinists Irmina Trynkos, Elisso Gogibedashwili, cellist Jeremy Findlay and many more.
