About

Douglas-McNabney-photo-Bo-Huang

An international classical music festival and academy that is entering it’s tenth season, Toronto Summer Music Festival brings world-renowned performing artists to Toronto for an unparalleled combination of concerts, guest lectures and Masterclasses.

“Toronto Summer Music has become one of the city’s most eagerly awaited summer cultural events, and I am thrilled to welcome audiences to our festival and academy where we create and foster connections between great artists and great music.” says Douglas McNabney.

The 2014 TSMF featured an array of renowned Canadian and international artists including Emerson String Quartet, Sondra Radvanovsky and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in seven concerts in Koerner Hall at the Royal Conservatory and eleven concerts in Walter Hall at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.  The 2015 Festival will be announced in April 2015.

The TSMF Academy offers instruction at the highest level to musicians on the threshold of professional careers through the Chamber Music Institute and the Art of Song programs. As part of the Festival, TSMF Fellows performed on stage along with Resident Artists of the festival in a series of Saturday concerts – TSMF Fellows and Mentors.

2015 Academy Programs

The Chamber Music Institute (July 12 – August 8)

The Chamber Music Institute for piano and strings welcomes individuals and pre-formed ensembles for three weeks of intensive coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances. The focus is on learning through performance where the fellows will perform alongside our guest artists as mentors. With an enrolment limited to 18, participating fellows work with a distinguished international faculty in an intimate, collegial atmosphere. Individual instrumentalists will be placed in chamber groups with at least one artist mentor per group.

The Art of Song Program (July 12 – July 25)

This program, for a small cohort of eight singers and four pianists, is devoted to the study and performance of Art Song. During this two-week session, participants study with all faculty members, voice and piano, thus receiving advice from a variety of musical traditions and perspectives. The session will also offer detailed study of text, diction, and action coaching. Our goal is to provide the selected Fellows the luxury of total immersion in Art Song in a community of artists from around the world.  To Learn More and Apply Click Here.

This year’s mentors include the great Finnish Soprano, Soile Isokoski, Kammersängerin of the Vienna State Opera, as well as Martin Katz, one of the world’s most celebrated collaborative pianists.  Steven Philcox will be coordinating the program.
