Tapestry’s new 2014 Composer-Librettist Laboratory is underway! Tapestry have combined two impressive Governor General Award winning playwrights, a Jules Leger Award winning composer, a Louis Appelbaum winner, and a Carol Bolt (Playwrights Guild of Canada) winner for this years 2014 Composer-Librettist Laboratory.

Participants include:

Writers:
Morris Panych
Nicolas Billon
David Yee
Donna-Michelle St. Bernard

Composers:
Nichole Lizée
Dean Burry
Christopher Thornborrow
Ivan Barbotin

The intensive summer program was originally started in 1995, as a formal way for composers and writers to explore the collaborative process. The lab attracts applicants from all around the world, and has become the model for other well-known opera companies such as the English National Opera Studio’s All-in Opera, as well as Pacific Opera Victoria’s Composer-Librettist Workshop.

Over the past 19 years, the lab has formed over 40 creative teams, including composer Chan Ka Nin and librettist Mark Brownell, James Rolfe and Camyar Chai, Marjorie Chan and Abigail Richardson, and Alex Poch-Goldin and Omar Daniel.

Musical Toronto will on hand for an update on what these talented composers and librettists come up with.
