Jason Doell wins 2014 Toronto Emerging Composer Award

York University 2010 grad Jason Doell, is the 2014 winner of the Canadian Music Centre’s Toronto Emerging Composer Award.  Doell will be recognized on May 25 at Koerner Hall as part of the Esprit Orchestra’s season finale, and the Royal Conservatory’s 21C Music Festival.

This year’s Award jury was unanimously impressed by Jason Doell’s musical vision, and proposed music project.

Jason Doell is both a composer and multi-instrumentalist, and has studied with Matt Brubeck, David Lidov, William Westcott, David Mott and Juliet Palmer. He has been very busy over the past four years, with over 20 premieres in Canada and the United States. Upcoming performances include: a collaborative piece with composer/ percussionist Germaine Liu at the Music Gallery on May 15th as part of the Emergents series, a piece for the Arraymusic Young Composers’ Workshop also in May, and a string quartet for the Cecilia Quartet as part of Soundstreams’ Emerging Composer Workshop that will be performed on April 6th.

According to the press release, “The Toronto Emerging Composer Award was revived in 2010 through a multi-year commitment from philanthropists Michael M. Koerner and Roger D. Moore. Its purpose is to recognize the excellent work of emerging music creators from the Greater Toronto Area who exhibit innovation, experimentation and a willingness to take risks in their work. As the winner, Jason Doell will receive $6,000 towards a piece for guitar with variable electroacoustic components to be performed by celebrated guitarist Rob Macdonald.”
