Album review: Molinari Quartet's Frédéric Bednarz digs deep in Szymanowski sonata

By John Terauds on April 30, 2013

fredMontreal-based violinist Frédéric Bednarz, a member of the Molinari Quartet since 2007, has poured his heart, soul and considerable technique into the classical equivalent of an EP, featuring the 1904 Violin Sonata, Op. 9, by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937).

Elegantly accompanied by his wife, Natsuki Hiratsuka, Bednarz’s forceful interpretation of this thematically and harmonically rich music compels attention.

Themes are laid out with great care. Bednarz’s phrasing is impeccable. Best of all, he and Hiratsuka are true partners in dialogue.

sonataSzymanovski’s sonata has the sound and development of something César Franck would have written, yet it’s hardly ever heard. Bednarz is doing his level best to make sure this changes.

The violinist has done his best to provide audio samples in a variety of different formats. You can find out more here.
