Tafelmusik joins move towards extending age limit for cheap tickets to 35

By John Terauds on September 7, 2012

Tafelmusik announced the creation of Tafelscene, a discount ticket program for people under 35 very similar to the Toronto Symphony’s tsoundcheck enterprise, which has been running for many years now.

This is Tafelmusik’s second attempt to reach young people. As the Toronto Symphony discovered with tsoundcheck, younger ticket buyers evaporated when they crossed the age threshold into regular-priced concert tickets. So both organizations now offer substantial discounts as well as tailored information packages and some social events geared to patrons 35 and under.

Tsoundcheck’s current special offer (likely to be replaced with something new once the season resumes in two weeks) offers balcony seats for three concerts at $22 each.

Tafelscene is offering single tickets to any concert, starting at $15 each.

Continued from previous seasons is “pay-what-you-can Fridays,” which includes seven concert dates this year.

Raising the age limit is a clear sign that many younger music fans need to see very low prices before they’ll commit to a concert. It’ll be interesting to see if, in five years, the limit will need to be raised to 40. In the meantime, this is an amazingly cheap way to catch some of the finest classical musicmaking in the city.
