Friday: Programme confirmed for Toronto Beethoven pop-up concert at Heliconian Hall

By John Terauds on June 19, 2012

To add real local musicmaking to the promotional spin around today’s release of a compendium album in Beethoven for All, an all-Ludwig van Beethoven recording project being led by conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim, Universal Music Canada has organized a pop-up concert featuring a mix of Toronto amateurs and professionals at Heliconian Hall on Friday, June 22, at 7 p.m.

Besides performing for a live audience at the intimate venue, the musicians’ work will also be streamed live on the Web.

It’s a salon-like programme with a mix of the light and substantial, mostly focused on the piano. I think it’s a wonderful way to highlight even a tiny slice of the rich community musicmaking that’s part of life in Toronto. I intend to be there to cheer everyone on.

Universal spokesperson Thom McKercher, the organizer of Friday’s concert, is so enthusiastic about this little bit of community involvement that he will start the programme off himself at the hall’s nice Steinway grand piano with the “Adagio cantabile” movement from Beethoven’s “Pathétique” Sonata.

The youngest participant is 6-year-old Patrick Vidrih, who will play Turkish March. There are several much more advanced performers, as well as the recently formed Riverdale String Quartet and professional pianist Oleg Samokhin.

Besides McKercher and Vidrih, here is the rest of the programme:
Carrie Zheng, “Rondo” from Sonatina in F Major
Aanika Roy, Für Elise
Erick Oliver Wawrzkiewicz (violin) and Jennifer Liu (piano), “Allegro con brio” from Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 7 in C Minor, op. 30, No. 2
Olivier Rabu, “Allegro ma non troppo” from Sonata No. 20 in G Major, op. 49, No. 2
Emily Mende, Sonatina in F Major
John Holland (baritone) and William Shookhoff (piano), An die ferne Geliebte, op. 98
Zhao Lin, Grave, “Allegro di molto e con brio” from Piano Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, op. 13 “Pathétique”
The Riverdale String Quartet — Amilia Cervantes and Levi Falk, violins, Danielle Couto, viola, and cellist Brendon Lam — String Quartet No. 1 in F Major, op. 18. No. 1
Lisa Li, “Allegro vivace” from Piano Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 2 No. 2
Oleg Samokhin, “Allegro” from Piano Sonata No. 29 op. 106 “Hammerklavier”
And, in a nod to the world of musical mashups, DJ Dopey will close the concert with something inspired by Beethoven’s work.

Information on getting admission or access to the live stream is supposed to get posted here.

McKercher tells me that today’s launch of Beethoven for All marks the first time that iTunes has offered a featured spot on its site for a classical album.

“We are trying to get the iTunes listener interested in the classics.,” McKercher states. “The 2-CD equivalent will be made available for $9.99 and given the most promotion ever seen for a classical release.”
