It’s a fabulous afternoon for opera for those who don’t want to face the other side of the front door:
- At 1 p.m., CBC radio 2’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera broadcasts Verdi’s Ernani, which is not heard all that often. A strong cast includes young soprano Angela Meade as Elvira and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Don Carlo. Marco Armiliato conducts. (For the more outgoing, Cineplex is offering the live, high-definition cinema broadcast in its usual opera theatres, starting at 12:55 p.m.)
- At 2:15 p.m., medici.tv is providing a free, live high-definition webcast of Renée Fleming’s operatic début as Ariadne, in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne Auf Naxos, from the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden. Conducting is the fabulous Christian Thielemann. For more information, click here. (The performance should remain free for streaming on the site, starting tomorrow or Monday.)
