Toronto-raised, Nova Scotia-based soprano Stacie Dunlop and St. John’s, Nfld. pianist Krista Vincent present a multimedia recital of art songs inspired by the words of poet Charles Beaudelaire (1821-1867) at Parkdale’s Gallery 345 at 8 p.m.

The music for the program, entitled “Rêve doux-amer/ Bittersweet Dream” centres on Beaudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal. It includes well-known mélodies by French composers, contemporary settings by Elliott Carter and Jonathan Harvey, as well as three pieces commissioned by Dunlop for this project.
Tonight’s concert is the third performance of this show, which includes visual art projections as well as translations of the texts.
Dunlop explains how she enlisted the help of Halifax theatre director Roberta Barker to help shape the show.
The whole thing is a DIY effort by a talented singer looking to find new ways of presenting concerts to a public that may not be into a traditional art-song recital.
“I’m one of these people with ideas — and they seem to work,” says Dunlop. But finding presenters outside the established agent channels is not always easy.
“You have to constantly knock on doors to prove that you’re worthy,” she admits. “But people haven’t been disappointed yet.”
