American power trio sparkles in new album of music featuring clarinet

By John Terauds on December 14, 2011

This week saw the arrival in my mailbox of a terrific new disc of music for piano, violin and clarinet from three of the best musicians in the United States.

Cellist David Finckel, pianist Wu Han — the husband-and-wife powerhouse team named Musical America’s Musicians of the Year — and clarinettist David Schifrin have collaborated on an album of clarinet trios that includes Beethoven’s Op. 11 Trio in B-flat Major.

That piece is on the Amici “Critic’s Choice” program on Friday night at the Glenn Gould Studio. It was chosen by Classical96 FM’s John van Driel.

The exuberant piece gets a sparkling interpretation at the hands of the Americans. The rest of the disc is equally satisfying, featuring Brahms’ Op. 114 Trio in A minor and four of the Eight Pieces by Max Bruch.
